Colorectal Screening

Colon Cancer Screening is testing designed to determine if someone is at risk for cancer. Several types of testing are available to help in detecting abnormalities that may exist in the large intestine (colon) or rectum. Screenings can be done by visual-based or at-home. Visual-based screening is done in a medical facility where the inside of the colon and rectum is examined by a physician. The at-home screening is done in the privacy of your home where stool is collected and sent to the lab where it is tested for abnormalities. Colonoscopy, CT Colonography (or virtual colonoscopy) and sigmoidoscopy are Visual-Based screening. Fecal immunochemical test (FIT), High-Sensitivity Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) and DNA stool test are at-home screening tests. These methods are done as a precautionary measure.

Getting screened finds problems that can be treated before cancer develops or spreads. Regular screening may reduce the risk for death and complications caused by this type of cancer. Physicians may recommend that patients are to get screened every 10 years starting at age 45. Those who have a history of inflammatory bowel disease, hereditary syndrome, radiation to the abdomen or pelvis to treat prior cancer, or a family history of colorectal cancer are advised to start screening before the age of 45. If you experience any rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, or constipation it is encouraged to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Physical activity, limiting the use of alcohol, and eating healthy are ways to help reduce the risk factors of colorectal cancer.
